Slot Terms Glossary: RTP, Volatility, Paylines, Wilds and 30 Other Slot Terms Explained

This glossary explains the slot terms you will meet in game rules and paytables, grouped into game basics, money terms, bonus features and maths terms. The most important are RTP (the share of all stakes a game is designed to return over the long run), house edge (100% minus RTP) and volatility (how wins are spread out over time). Every outcome is decided by a random number generator, so none of these terms describe a way to predict or beat a game. Always check the specific game's rules, because labels such as max win or bonus terms vary between games.

How to use this slot terms glossary

Game rules and paytables are full of jargon. This slot terms glossary groups about 30 common slot terms into four sets: game basics, money and stake terms, bonus features, and maths terms. Where possible the definitions follow how regulators and testing laboratories describe these ideas, but each game's own rules screen is the final word, because developers do not all use labels the same way. The UK Gambling Commission, for example, expects a game's rules, its house edge or RTP, and its prizes to be easily available before you bet, so the information should be there to check.

Game basics

  • Reel: a vertical column of symbols that spins and stops; layouts range from three reels to large grids
  • Symbol: a picture on the reels; what each symbol pays is listed in the paytable
  • Payline (line): a fixed path across the reels on which matching symbols must land to pay, usually counted from the leftmost reel
  • Ways to win (ways): instead of fixed lines, matching symbols pay on adjacent reels in any row position; five reels of three rows give 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 243 ways
  • Cluster pays: wins are paid for groups of touching identical symbols rather than lines or ways
  • Paytable: the screen listing what each symbol combination and feature pays, usually as a multiple of the stake
  • RNG (random number generator): the software that decides every outcome; the UK Gambling Commission requires its output to be acceptably random, uniformly distributed and unpredictable
  • Spin: one round of play; each spin is decided independently of the ones before it
  • Demo mode: a free-play version that uses virtual credits; it shows how a game works but involves no real money and no real wins

Money and stake terms

  • Stake (bet, total bet): the amount you wager on one spin, for example RM1
  • Coin value and lines: on some line games the total bet is coin value multiplied by lines played, so 20 lines at RM0.05 cost RM1.00 per spin
  • Bet level: a setting some games use to multiply the base bet up or down
  • Win multiple (x): prizes are often shown as multiples of the stake; a 50x win on a RM1 spin pays RM50
  • Max win: the largest amount the game can pay from a single spin or feature, often stated as a multiple of the stake; the rules may cap a win at this level
  • Wagering requirement (playthrough): with bonus money, the total you must bet before bonus funds or their winnings can be withdrawn; a RM50 bonus with a 30x requirement means RM1,500 of bets
  • Game weighting (contribution): how much a bet on each game counts towards a wagering requirement; different game types may count at different rates

Bonus features

  • Wild: a symbol that substitutes for other symbols to complete a win, usually except special symbols such as scatters
  • Scatter: a symbol that typically pays or triggers a feature wherever it lands, not only on a line
  • Multiplier: a feature that multiplies a win, for example a 3x multiplier turns a RM10 win into RM30
  • Free spins: spins awarded by a feature, usually played at the stake of the spin that triggered them without deducting from your balance; not the same as an operator's free-spin offer, which has its own terms
  • Bonus round (feature): a special mode triggered during play, such as free spins or a pick-and-win screen; in many games a large share of the return sits here
  • Bonus buy (feature buy): an option to pay a set price, often a multiple of the stake, to enter the bonus round directly; it is not offered in every game or market, and its RTP may differ from the base game
  • Cascading reels (tumble, avalanche): winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in, which can create further wins from the same paid spin
  • Respin: a free re-spin of some or all reels, often with certain symbols held in place
  • Sticky wild: a wild that stays in place for a number of spins
  • Jackpot: a top prize; a fixed jackpot pays a set amount or multiple, while a progressive jackpot grows with a share of each eligible bet until it is won and then resets to a seed value

Maths terms

  • RTP (return to player): the ratio of the total amount won to the total amount wagered; testing standards distinguish theoretical RTP, calculated from the game's maths or simulation, from actual RTP, measured from real play
  • House edge: 100% minus RTP; a 96.5% RTP game has a 3.5% house edge, so over RM1,000 wagered the expected long-run cost is about RM35
  • Volatility (variance): how wins are spread out; low volatility pays small wins often, high volatility pays rarely but larger; some developers show it as low, medium, high or on a 1 to 5 scale
  • Hit frequency: the share of spins that return any payout at all, including payouts smaller than the stake
  • Near miss: a losing result that looks close to a big win; the UK Gambling Commission does not allow games to falsely display near-miss results
  • Expected value: the average result per bet over a very large number of plays; with a house edge it is negative for the player

RTP and house edge are the two terms worth understanding first. The full explanation, including why one game can have several RTP versions, is here: Slot RTP Explained: What 96% Really Means (and What It Doesn't).

Terms that are often misunderstood

  • Hit frequency is not a win rate: a hit can pay back less than you staked, so it can still be a loss
  • Free spins inside a game feature are different from free-spin promotions, which may carry wagering requirements
  • Max win is a ceiling written into the rules, not a target or a likely result
  • RTP does not describe a single session; over a few hundred spins, volatility and chance dominate
  • A short demo session shows how features work but tells you very little about long-run returns

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which slot terms matter most?
RTP, house edge and volatility. RTP and house edge tell you the long-run cost of playing, and volatility tells you how unevenly wins arrive along the way. Paylines, wilds and features describe how a game pays, not how much it pays overall.
What is the difference between paylines and ways to win?
Paylines are fixed paths across the reels, and matching symbols must land on an active line to pay. Ways to win pay matching symbols on adjacent reels in any row position, so a 5-reel, 3-row game has 243 possible ways.
Is hit frequency the same as RTP?
No. Hit frequency is how often a spin returns anything at all, even an amount smaller than the stake. RTP is the share of all stakes the game is designed to return over the long run. A game can hit often and still have a modest RTP.
