Slot Paylines, Ways to Win and Megaways Explained: How Slot Wins Are Counted

Slot paylines are fixed paths across the reels: a spin pays only when matching symbols land along an active line in the direction the rules allow. Ways-to-win games drop fixed lines and pay matching symbols on adjacent reels in any row, so a 5-reel, 3-row grid gives 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 ways. Megaways, a mechanic created by Big Time Gaming, changes how many symbols each reel shows on every spin, so the number of ways changes too. A bigger number of lines or ways does not mean a better return; the long-run return is still set by the game's RTP.

What slot paylines are

Slot paylines are the fixed paths across the reels along which matching symbols must land for a spin to pay. On a 5-reel, 3-row game, one payline might run straight along the middle row, another along the top, and another in a V or zig-zag shape. In many payline games a win must start on the leftmost reel and continue reel by reel to the right; some games also pay right to left. Matching symbols that do not sit on an active line do not pay. The game's paytable shows every line pattern and the direction in which wins are counted.

Each game sets its own rules for details such as whether only the highest win on a line is paid and how wins on different lines are combined, so the rules screen of the game you are looking at is the only reliable reference.

Fixed and adjustable paylines: what your stake covers

Some games let you choose how many lines to play; others have fixed lines that are always active. On games priced per line, the total stake is the line bet multiplied by the number of active lines. At RM0.05 per line on 20 lines, each spin costs RM1.00. Drop to 10 lines and the spin costs RM0.50, but half of the line patterns can no longer pay. On fixed-line games you choose a total stake, and it covers all lines together.

  • Total stake = line bet × number of active lines
  • 20 lines × RM0.05 = RM1.00 per spin, so 100 spins means RM100 wagered
  • 10 lines × RM0.05 = RM0.50 per spin, with fewer combinations able to pay
  • Fixed-line games: the stake shown already covers every line

Ways to win: no fixed lines

Ways-to-win games replace fixed lines with a simpler rule: matching symbols pay when they land on adjacent reels, in any row position, counted in the direction the rules specify, often from the leftmost reel. The number of ways is the number of symbol positions on each reel multiplied together. A 5-reel, 3-row grid gives 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 ways. A grid of 6 reels with 6 rows each gives 6 × 6 × 6 × 6 × 6 × 6 = 46,656 ways, which is the figure one developer publishes for a game with that layout.

In games that count ways this way, a symbol appearing more than once on a reel creates extra paths. With two matching symbols on reel 1, one on reel 2 and three on reel 3, a three-of-a-kind win counts as 2 × 1 × 3 = 6 ways.

Megaways: ways that change every spin

Megaways™ is a reel mechanic created by Big Time Gaming and licensed to other developers. Instead of a fixed number of rows, each reel shows a random number of symbols on every spin, so the number of ways changes from spin to spin. On Big Time Gaming's official page for one of its Megaways games, the reels show 2 to 7 symbols and the game lists up to 117,649 ways. That maximum is what six reels of seven symbols produce: 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 117,649.

  • Six reels showing 2 symbols each: 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 64 ways
  • Reels showing 3, 5, 2, 7, 4 and 6 symbols: 3 × 5 × 2 × 7 × 4 × 6 = 5,040 ways
  • Six reels showing 7 symbols each: 117,649 ways

The 'up to' figure describes the best case, not a typical spin. Layouts, extra rows and maximum ways differ between games, so read the rules of each game rather than assuming a standard.

More lines or ways does not mean better value

On an adjustable-line game, activating more lines lets more combinations pay, so more spins show some kind of win, but each spin also costs more. A win can also be smaller than the stake, so a spin that 'wins' can still lose money. Across different games, a bigger number of lines or ways does not mean a better return. The long-run return is set by the game's RTP, explained here: Slot RTP Explained: What 96% Really Means (and What It Doesn't). A 243-ways game and a 20-line game that are both 96% RTP have the same expected long-run cost of about RM4 per RM100 wagered; they only spread the wins differently.

How to read a game's paytable and rules

  • Whether the game uses paylines, ways or another system such as cluster pays, and how many
  • The direction wins are counted: left to right only, or both ways
  • Whether prizes are shown as multiples of the line bet or of the total stake
  • How wild and scatter symbols work and how features are triggered
  • The game's RTP and maximum win, often on the last rules page

For example, in Great Britain the Gambling Commission's technical standards require an explanation of a game's rules, including what counts as a winning outcome, to be easily available before a player commits to gamble. Wherever you are, if a game's rules are hard to find or unclear, treat that as a reason for caution.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do more paylines increase my chances of winning?
On an adjustable-line game, more active lines means more combinations can pay, so more spins show a win, but the cost per spin rises with every line you add. It does not make the game a better bet: the long-run return is described by the game's RTP, so check the rules for the exact figure.
What does 243 ways to win mean?
It means a 5-reel, 3-row game has no fixed paylines: matching symbols on adjacent reels, in any row, form a win. Multiplying the 3 positions on each of the 5 reels gives 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 possible paths.
Is a Megaways slot better than a payline slot?
Not because of its structure. Megaways changes the number of ways on every spin, up to the maximum a game states, but the long-run return is set by RTP and the size of the swings by volatility. Compare those figures in each game's rules rather than the headline number of ways.
