Free Spins Wagering Requirements Explained: Bonus Terms, Max Cashout and Expiry

Free spins wagering requirements set how much you must bet before bonus winnings become withdrawable. If RM10 of free spin winnings carries a 35x requirement, you must wager RM350 first, and at 96% RTP the expected cost of that play is about RM14, more than the RM10 itself. Other terms matter just as much: a cap on how much can be cashed out, games that count only partly toward wagering, deadlines, and a maximum bet while the bonus is active. Read all of them before accepting any offer.

What free spins wagering requirements are

Free spins wagering requirements are the conditions that say how much you must bet before winnings from free spins, or from any bonus, can be withdrawn as cash. Until the requirement is met, those winnings are held as bonus funds. A wagering requirement, also called a playthrough, is usually written as a multiple such as 10x or 35x. The multiple may apply to the bonus, to the winnings, or to the deposit plus the bonus, and that difference changes the total a great deal.

Undertakings given to the UK Competition and Markets Authority by online operators define a wagering requirement as a requirement to place wagers totalling a particular value before funds become withdrawable, expressed either as a fixed amount or as a multiple of a deposit or bonus. That definition is a useful reference for reading any bonus terms.

How the playthrough adds up

  • RM50 bonus, 10x on the bonus only: RM50 × 10 = RM500 to wager
  • RM50 bonus, 35x on the bonus only: RM50 × 35 = RM1,750 to wager
  • RM50 deposit plus RM50 bonus, 35x on both: RM100 × 35 = RM3,500 to wager

Wagering is turnover, not loss: each RM1 bet counts as RM1 wagered whether it wins or loses. But turnover has an expected cost. At 96% RTP, the expected long-run cost is about 4% of everything wagered; the RTP guide explains why: Slot RTP Explained: What 96% Really Means (and What It Doesn't). On RM500 that is about RM20. On RM1,750 it is about RM70, which is more than the RM50 bonus itself. These are averages; any single attempt can end far above or below them.

Free spins are valued at a set stake

Free spins are tied to specific games named in the terms, and each spin is played at a stake fixed by the offer. 20 free spins at RM0.20 each have a face value of RM4. Suppose they return RM6 in winnings and the terms require 10x wagering on those winnings: you would need to wager RM60 before the RM6 could be withdrawn, and at 96% RTP that play has an expected cost of about RM2.40. The headline number of spins says little until you know the stake per spin and the wagering attached to the winnings.

Max cashout: the cap on what you can withdraw

Some offers cap the amount that can be withdrawn from bonus winnings. If the cap is RM100 and you finish the wagering with a RM350 bonus balance, only RM100 becomes withdrawable and the remaining RM250 is removed. The cap does not reduce the wagering requirement, so a low cap combined with high wagering leaves little realistic value. In the UK undertakings, any cap on winnings is listed as a significant condition that must be shown clearly.

Game weighting: not every bet counts in full

Terms may restrict which games can be played with bonus funds, and may count bets on some games only partly, or not at all, toward wagering. The percentages are set in each offer's terms. Suppose slots count 100% and a table game counts 10%: RM100 bet on the slot reduces the requirement by RM100, while RM100 bet on the table game reduces it by only RM10. Clearing a RM500 requirement on that table game alone would take RM5,000 of bets.

Expiry dates and maximum bet rules

  • Expiry: free spins may have to be used within one period and the wagering completed within another; bonus funds and winnings left when time runs out can be removed
  • Maximum bet: while bonus funds are active, terms may set a maximum stake per spin, for example RM5, and a bet above it can be grounds for voiding winnings
  • Prohibited patterns of play: under the UK undertakings, terms must clearly specify every prohibited type or pattern of play rather than leave it to the operator's discretion

Time limits and maximum stake size are both named as significant conditions in those undertakings, alongside restrictions on which games can be played and the wagering needed before winnings can be withdrawn. That list is a practical guide to what to look for in any set of terms.

How a regulator treats bonus terms: the British example

For example, in Great Britain the Gambling Commission limited bonus wagering requirements to a maximum of 10 times, in force from 19 January 2026, and banned promotions that require gambling on more than one type of product, such as betting and slots. Its own illustration: a £10 bonus with a 50x requirement meant playing through £500 before winnings could be withdrawn. Other jurisdictions set different rules, so treat this as a reference point for judging terms, not as the rule that applies to you.

A checklist before accepting any bonus

  • What the multiple applies to: the bonus, the winnings, or the deposit plus the bonus
  • The total wagering in RM, and its expected cost at the game's RTP
  • The stake per free spin and the games the spins are tied to
  • Max cashout, game weighting, expiry and maximum bet
  • Whether you can withdraw your own deposit before the wagering is complete

If the expected cost of the wagering is larger than the bonus, the offer is unlikely to be worth anything in cash terms. Declining a bonus is a perfectly reasonable choice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does 35x wagering mean?
It means you must place bets totalling 35 times the amount the requirement applies to before the funds can be withdrawn. On a RM20 bonus, 35x on the bonus means RM700 of bets. Check whether the multiple applies to the bonus, the winnings or the deposit plus the bonus.
Are free spin winnings real money?
Only after any wagering requirement and other conditions are met, and then only up to any max cashout cap. Until then they are held as bonus funds, which can be removed if the terms are broken or the bonus expires.
Is a lower wagering requirement always better?
For the same bonus, yes: less turnover means a lower expected cost. But compare the full terms, because a low multiple combined with a very low max cashout, a short expiry or restricted games can still leave little value.
