Odds Format Conversion: Malay, Decimal (Euro), Hong Kong & Indo
Odds format conversion is simple if you remember one thing: decimal 2.00 is the pivot point. Positive Malay odds are the same as Hong Kong odds (decimal = odds + 1). Negative Malay odds mean you must stake that amount to win 1 unit (decimal = 1 + 1/|odds|). Indo odds are the mirror of Malay odds: positive Indo covers the negative Malay region, and vice versa. Example: decimal 1.90 = Malay 0.90 = HK 0.90 = Indo -1.11, while decimal 2.50 = Malay -0.67 = HK 1.50 = Indo 1.50.
Why different odds formats exist
Different platforms display odds in different default formats: most Asian platforms offer Malay, Hong Kong and Indo options, while decimal (also called European odds) is used worldwide. The actual value of a bet is identical — only the way it is written differs. The basics of reading Malay odds are covered in our guide: /en/articles/how-to-read-football-odds.
The four formats in one sentence each
- Decimal (European): total return per 1 unit, including the stake. Decimal 1.90: stake RM100, return RM190 (RM90 profit).
- Hong Kong: profit only per 1 unit, always positive. HK 0.90: stake RM100, profit RM90.
- Malay: a value between -1.00 and 1.00. Positive = same as HK (profit per 1 unit). Negative = the amount you must stake to win 1 unit.
- Indo: positive = profit per 1 unit (like HK). Negative = the amount you must stake to win 1 unit. Indo also equals American odds divided by 100.
Conversion formulas (use decimal as the bridge)
To decimal:
- Positive Malay or HK or positive Indo → decimal = odds + 1
- Negative Malay → decimal = 1 + (1 ÷ |odds|). Example Malay -0.80: 1 + (1 ÷ 0.80) = 2.25
- Negative Indo → decimal = 1 + (1 ÷ |odds|). Example Indo -1.25: 1 + (1 ÷ 1.25) = 1.80
From decimal:
- If decimal is below 2.00 → Malay = decimal - 1 (positive); Indo = -1 ÷ (decimal - 1)
- If decimal is above 2.00 → Indo = decimal - 1 (positive); Malay = -1 ÷ (decimal - 1)
- HK = decimal - 1 in all cases
Quick reference conversion table
- Decimal 1.50 = HK 0.50 = Malay 0.50 = Indo -2.00 (implied probability 66.67%)
- Decimal 1.80 = HK 0.80 = Malay 0.80 = Indo -1.25 (implied probability 55.56%)
- Decimal 1.90 = HK 0.90 = Malay 0.90 = Indo -1.11 (implied probability 52.63%)
- Decimal 2.00 = HK 1.00 = Malay 1.00 = Indo 1.00 (implied probability 50%)
- Decimal 2.25 = HK 1.25 = Malay -0.80 = Indo 1.25 (implied probability 44.44%)
- Decimal 2.50 = HK 1.50 = Malay -0.67 = Indo 1.50 (implied probability 40%)
- Decimal 3.00 = HK 2.00 = Malay -0.50 = Indo 2.00 (implied probability 33.33%)
Implied probability
Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal. Example: decimal 2.50 → 1 ÷ 2.50 = 40%. Keep in mind: if you add up the implied probabilities of all selections in one market, the total exceeds 100% — that excess is the operator's margin, and it is why a player's long-term expectation is negative.
The most common confusion: Malay vs Indo
Malay and Indo odds are mirrors of each other. In Malay odds, positive numbers are the more favoured side and negative numbers are the less favoured side. In Indo odds, it is the other way around. Decimal 2.50 is written as -0.67 in Malay but +1.50 in Indo. If you switch platforms and the plus/minus signs look "flipped", the platform is most likely using a different format — check the odds display setting first.
One more key point: Malay 1.00, Malay -1.00, Indo 1.00 and Indo -1.00 all mean the same thing — decimal 2.00, where the profit equals the stake.
This quarter-split concept is used throughout Asian handicap — see our Asian handicap guide for half-ball and quarter-ball calculations.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- What is Malay odds -0.80 in decimal?
- Malay -0.80 means you must stake 0.80 units to win 1 unit. In decimal: 1 + (1 ÷ 0.80) = 2.25. A winning RM100 bet gives RM125 profit, RM225 total return.
- Why are the plus and minus signs of Malay and Indo odds opposite?
- The two formats use opposite conventions. In Malay odds, positive numbers indicate the favoured side (profit less than stake) and negative numbers the less favoured side. Indo odds use the reverse convention, the same as American odds divided by 100. The value of the bet is identical — only the notation differs.
- What do odds of 1.00 or -1.00 mean?
- In the Malay, Hong Kong and Indo formats, 1.00 (and -1.00 for Malay/Indo) all equal decimal 2.00 — a bet where the profit equals the stake, or a 50% implied probability.
