Asian Handicap Deep Dive: Half-Ball & Quarter-Ball (0.25 / 0.75)
Asian handicap has three types of lines. Full-ball lines (0, -1, -2) can push (stake refunded). Half-ball lines (-0.5, -1.5) have no draw — only win or loss. Quarter-ball lines (-0.25, -0.75, -1.25) split your stake 50/50 across two adjacent lines, producing half-win or half-loss outcomes. Example: on -0.75, if the team wins by one goal, half the stake wins (-0.5) and half is refunded (-1.0) — this is a "half win". Understanding the stake split is the key to calculating returns correctly.
The three types of handicap lines
Asian handicap uses three classes of lines, distinguished by how they handle the draw:
- Full-ball (0, -1, -2): if the adjusted score ends level, the stake is refunded (push). The 0 line is also called "draw no bet".
- Half-ball (-0.5, -1.5, -2.5): no push is possible — half a goal cannot be scored. Every bet wins or loses cleanly.
- Quarter-ball (-0.25, -0.75, -1.25, -1.75): the stake is split equally across two adjacent lines. This produces partial results.
Full-ball lines: the push possibility
On a -1.0 handicap, the favoured team must win by two or more goals for the bet to win. If they win by exactly one goal, the adjusted score is a draw and your stake is refunded in full — no profit, no loss. If they win by two or more, you win. If they draw or lose, you lose.
Half-ball lines: win or lose only
On -0.5, the team must win the match for the bet to win. A draw or loss means a loss. No push is possible, because the adjusted score cannot be exactly level. The outcome of -0.5 is the same as betting the team to win in 1X2 (see market types: Types of Football Markets: A Beginner's Guide to 1X2, Handicap & Over/Under), but the handicap odds are often better because the two-way market carries a lower margin.
Quarter-ball lines: the most important concept
Quarter lines split your stake 50/50 across two adjacent lines. Here is how they work:
-0.75 splits into -0.5 and -1.0. Say you stake RM100 (RM50 on -0.5, RM50 on -1.0):
- Team wins by 2+ goals: both halves win.
- Team wins by exactly 1 goal: the -0.5 half wins, the -1.0 half pushes (refunded). This is a half win.
- Team draws or loses: both halves lose.
+0.75 splits into +0.5 and +1.0:
- Team wins or draws: both halves win.
- Team loses by exactly 1 goal: the +0.5 half loses, the +1.0 half pushes. This is a half loss (half the stake lost, half refunded).
- Team loses by 2+ goals: both halves lose.
-0.25 splits into 0 (draw no bet) and -0.5:
- Team wins: both halves win.
- Team draws: the 0 half pushes (refunded), the -0.5 half loses. This is a half loss.
- Team loses: both halves lose.
+0.25 splits into 0 and +0.5:
- Team wins: both halves win.
- Team draws: the 0 half pushes, the +0.5 half wins. This is a half win.
- Team loses: both halves lose.
How to calculate half-win returns
This is the most common calculation mistake. Say you stake RM100 on -0.75 at decimal odds 1.90, and the team wins by exactly one goal (half win):
- The winning half: RM50 × 1.90 = RM95 (RM50 stake + RM45 profit)
- The pushed half: RM50 refunded
- Total return: RM95 + RM50 = RM145 (net profit RM45)
The WRONG calculation is (RM50 × 1.90) × 2 = RM190. You only won half, not the whole bet. For Malay/HK/Indo odds formats, convert to decimal first using our guide: Odds Format Conversion: Malay, Decimal (Euro), Hong Kong & Indo.
Why quarter lines exist
Quarter lines allow more precise positioning between two half-lines. If you think the favoured team should win but the draw probability is non-trivial, -0.25 gives partial protection that -0.5 does not: on -0.5 a draw is a full loss, while on -0.25 a draw is only a half loss. FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- What does a -0.75 handicap mean and how is it settled?
- A -0.75 handicap splits your stake 50/50 across the -0.5 and -1.0 lines. If the team wins by two or more goals, both halves win. If it wins by exactly one goal, the -0.5 half wins and the -1.0 half is refunded — producing a half win. If it draws or loses, both halves lose.
- What is the difference between a -0.25 and a -0.5 line?
- On -0.5, a draw is a full loss. On -0.25 (which splits into 0 and -0.5), a draw is only a half loss because the 0 half is refunded while the -0.5 half loses. The -0.25 line gives partial protection against a draw that -0.5 does not.
- How do you calculate returns for a half win?
- Calculate each half of the stake separately. Example: RM100 on -0.75 at odds 1.90, half win: the winning half is RM50 × 1.90 = RM95, the pushed half refunds RM50, total RM145 (RM45 profit). Not RM190 — you only won half the stake.
