Corners & Cards Markets: How They Are Settled
Corners and cards markets are bets on the number of corners or cards in a match, not on the final result. Both are settled on 90 minutes (including injury time), excluding extra time. For cards: a yellow card usually counts as 1 and a straight red as 2; a player who gets two yellows then a red counts as 3 (maximum 3 per player). For corners: most platforms count corners TAKEN, not awarded. The exact rules differ between platforms, so always check your platform's terms.
What corners and cards markets are
Corners and cards markets are bets on the number of corners or cards in a match, rather than on the win/draw/loss result. They are part of the "match statistics" markets. The basics of other market types are covered in our guide: Types of Football Markets: A Beginner's Guide to 1X2, Handicap & Over/Under.
The most common form is over/under — for example "over 9.5 corners" or "over 4.5 cards". The over/under concept, including quarter lines, is explained here: Over/Under Advanced: Quarter Lines 2.25 & 2.75 Explained.
The 90-minute rule
Like most markets, corners and cards are settled on 90 minutes of play (including the referee's injury/stoppage time), NOT including extra time. Cards shown during the half-time break are usually counted as second-half cards. Cards after the final whistle do not count.
How cards are counted
The most common card-counting system:
- Yellow card = 1
- Straight red card = 2
- One yellow + one straight red (same player) = 3
- Two yellows leading to a red = 3
- Maximum per player = 3
Cards shown to players NOT taking part (substitutes, substituted players) or team managers usually do NOT count.
Keep in mind: some platforms use a different "booking points" system — for example a yellow card = 10 points, a red card = 25 points. This system varies between platforms, so check your platform's terms.
How corners are counted
For corners, there is one important difference between platforms:
- Most platforms count corners TAKEN — i.e. corners actually played.
- Some platforms count corners AWARDED — i.e. corners given by the referee.
This difference matters: if a corner is awarded but not taken (for example, the final whistle is blown before it is played), it may or may not count, depending on the platform. Always check your platform's definition. How to read settlement terms is explained here: How to Understand a Platform's Settlement Rules.
Types of corners and cards markets
Some common forms:
- Over/Under: total corners or cards over/under a line.
- Handicap: one team given a virtual corner or card advantage/deficit.
- First corner/card: which team gets the first corner or card.
- Team with the most: which team gets more corners or cards.

This article is for educational purposes and does not encourage anyone to gamble. Understanding how these markets are settled does not guarantee winning and does not change the operator's margin. Because the rules differ between platforms, always refer to your platform's official terms. Other terms can be looked up in our glossary: Football Betting Terms: A Complete Glossary for Beginners. FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- How is a red card counted in cards markets?
- In most systems, a yellow card counts as 1 and a straight red as 2. A player who gets two yellow cards (then a red) or one yellow followed by a straight red counts as 3 cards — the maximum for a single player. Some platforms use a different booking-points system, so check your platform's terms.
- Do corners markets count corners taken or awarded?
- It depends on the platform. Most platforms count corners TAKEN (actually played), but some count corners AWARDED by the referee. If a corner is awarded but not taken, the result differs by platform. Always check your platform's definition.
- Does extra time count in corners and cards markets?
- No. Corners and cards markets are settled on 90 minutes (including injury time), not including extra time unless stated. Cards or corners after the 90-minute final whistle do not count.
